Unless you're a Kardashian, being in front of a camera probably leaves you feeling self conscious and a little awkward. If you were born before 1985, taking selfies was not part of your every day life and you may struggle to know the most flattering angles for your face and body. If this sounds like you, never fear, I have a few tips that will help you look like last month's cover model of Vogue (okay, I can't promise that but I can promise your photos will improve). Here are five tried and true tips to look your best the next time you find yourself in from t of the camera.
Tip #1: Take one step forward.
Placing one foot forward elongates your legs and who doesn't want that?! Instead of keeping your feet together, place one foot forward and place a little more weight on your back leg while rotating your shoulders just a bit. You can even cross one leg in front of the other for a more relaxed, flirty look. Easy peasy.
Tip #2: Lift your chin and tilt your head.
Lifting your chin just a bit and slightly rotating your head (keyword:slightly) is very flattering. Rather than facing the camera straight on, doing this softens your features and elongates your neck. Overdoing it will look unnatural so keep these adjustments subtle.
Another great tip is placing your feet and shoulders at a 45 degree angle to the camera. This pose is very flattering and I use it all the time.
Tip #3: Use your hands.
If you're solo and you're unsure what to do with your hands, following these tips will help you pose with confidence.
Tuck a strand of hair behind your ear
Put one hand in a pocket (not both)
Fold your arms (loosely) and slowly bring one hand to your chin or touch the tip of your ear
Touch two fingertips together in front of your body
Hold your sunglasses
Touch the tips of your hair
Tip #4: Choose clothing that flatters your body.
Wear clothes that you feel gorgeous in. Period. Loving your outfit boosts your confidence and that confidence will show in your images. When choosing clothing, follow these tried and true tips.
Avoid boxy and shapeless clothing as it will make you look wider than you are.
V-necks elongate your neck and open up your face.
Wearing heels improves your posture and elongates your legs.
Choose colors that compliment your skin tone
Tip #5: Move your body!
Have fun with your photos! Let yourself move and you'll be pleasantly surprised how amazing you look! Don't just stand there! Move your body-twirl, take a step forward, take a step backward, shift your weight, look off to the side, look down at the ground, smile, tilt your head back and laugh!
Adding movement relaxes you which makes you look and feel less awkward! Girl Scout promise!
I hope you'll use these tips the next time you're having your photo taken. I'd love to see how these tips work for you!
