My Top 5 Tips For Stress Free Family Photos

You've booked a family photo session! I know you want everything to go smoothly so you walk away with GORGEOUS images of your family that you can share on social media and proudly display in your home. You may be feeling a bit apprehensive and wondering if your vision of images that show real connection and genuine smiles will be replaced with tears and frustration. Rest assured that your anxiety is normal but following these tips will ensure a fun and happy experience for everyone.

1.) Don't make a huge deal out of it.If you're stressed out and cranky, your kids will usually pick up on it and act accordingly. When you are relaxed and enthusiastic about the session, your kids will follow suit. Compromises may have to be made such as letting your energetic daughter's hair stay straight instead of curling it because she won't sit still. Twenty years from now it will be the look of sweet laughter on her face that you'll cherish, not the locks of perfectly spiraled curls. Focus on the big picture and don't sweat the small stuff!

2.) Make it fun. Let the kids lead the session. If they want to make silly faces or choose their poses, let them! I promise you the shortest path to getting the images you want is by letting the kids "be kids". A good photographer will have some games to play that will help guide the children into the beautiful, authentic, unposed images you'll want to share with the world.

3.) Be Prepared. This goes without saying, but if you're going to be out for several hours, make sure your kids are well rested and have had their nap. Bringing along some their favorite snacks and activities is always a great idea. If you want photos taken of you and your spouse together, then bringing along a babysitter, family member or friend will help you focus on your time in the spotlight while knowing your children are being taken care of. If your session takes place outdoors, bug spray, sunscreen, and basic first aide items are always smart things to have available.

4.) Be Patient. I know how hard it is to let go and not bark orders at your kids but trust me, control will get you the opposite of what you want! You hired a photographer because of her skill and you know your family is worth the investment so relax and let her work her magic. If your help is needed, trust that she will let you know how you can help.

5.) Have a chat. Start a dialogue between your kids and the photographer. Ask them to share something exciting such as a recent birthday, a visit from a family member, their favorite cartoon character or a family pet. Children almost always light up when they can share more about themselves with a captive audience. This allows them to feel more comfortable and gives the photographer an opportunity to capture some really cute candid expressions.

I feel confident that following these tips will help you and your family have a fun and relaxed photo session that you all will remember fondly.
