Posing makes all the difference in the look and feel of your family photos. You want to see the genuine and authentic connections between your family members. Guided posing can help you showcase those connections.
If you've never taken professional photos before or you want to improve the images you took during your last session, the following advice on how to pose will ensure you capture the love and connection within your family.
Get Close
The last thing you want is a family portrait that looks awkward and stiff. The secret sauce to creating a gorgeous, intimate family photo is to get close. Snuggle up together to get the best photos. I always ask my families to get on the same level and squeeze one another in tight and close.
Have Fun
Nothing elicits more smile and laughter than being silly together! If you have little kids, let your own inner child come out too. Dance, make funny faces, sing out loud, or talk about something that happened recently that makes you all laugh. If you have older kids or teens, talking about funny memories or telling corny jokes are usually a sure fire way to coax a smile out of men the most stoic teenager. Your photographer should also have some fun prompts like "Look at the person who took the longest to get ready today". Any and all of these promote a sense of fun and lightness.
Keep It Natural
Try not to overthink posing because it takes away from the genuineness of your photos. It helps to shoot in a setting that feels comfortable for the entire family and allows you to go about your lives as naturally as possible. If you're session takes place at an outdoor location, pick wildflowers or skip rocks across a pond. If you're shooting at home, snuggle up on the couch for story or bake something together in the kitchen.
Use Your Surroundings
Use your surroundings to make yourselves more comfortable. For example, standing in the middle of a room may feel unnatural but sitting on a couch for a few poses feels more authentic. If you're outdoors in an urban environment, leaning up against a wall or sitting on some steps will provide a more natural feel.
Make Use of Props
If you want to give your child something to do, letting them hold a favorite doll, book, or toy car can give them an added sense of comfort which comes through in the images.
